Back in August, you might recall that we brought you an exclusive first look at images from Netflix’s new drama, which chronicles the adventures of Italian adventurer Marco Polo. If you were wondering to yourself what the pretty pictures look like when brought to life, your wait is over, because the first teaser trailer for the show has arrived.

The Venetian, who made it as far as China and turned his wanderings into his epic travelogue The Travels Of Marco Polo, is played here by newcomer Lorenzo Richelmy. The 10-part series will see his traveller discover that the intrigue and betrayals of Kublai Khan’s court are even fiddlier to negotiate than whatever A-road connects Venice to Ancient Mongolia.

This first batch of footage certainly bigs up the scope of the series, with lots of location shooting and some good-looking cinematography. Kon-Tiki co-directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg directed the first two episodes from scripts penned by show creator John Fusco. The show will hit Netflix’s servers on December 12, with all 10 episodes hitting at once, as per the streaming service’s custom. Begin the binge-watching! For more on the show, pick up the new issue ofEmpire, which will hit shelves this Thursday.
