Launched amid much fanfare with The Mandalorian, "maclunkey!" and its massive back catalogue of the studio's offerings, Disney+ started out looking like a strong contender in the increasingly crowded streaming market. But with few big, exciting shows or movies following that initial rush, it hasn't seen the same level of interest. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, that's because it has been scrapping planned projects, including a show set in the Tron universe.
The news sits within a story about departing CEO Bob Iger spending his remaining time focusing on Disney+, which has reportedly suffered from a lack of development direction. 12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley had been working on the Tron show (which was never formally announced) but it fell apart before details could get out.
Other shows shelved included a Muppets show from Josh Gad and Once Upon A Time duo Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (though they've since switched to a Beauty And The Beast prequel miniseries) and Book Of Enchantment, which would have focused on Disney's stock of villains. And then there are the limbo likes of Lizzie Maguire, which saw its showrunner leave over creative differences and the Love, Simon adaptation now being shifted over to Hulu because of its more grown-up tone.
Marvel has several shows on the way, though the first, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, won't launch for a few months yet. And given its resources, the Mouse House has deep pockets to keep the service going as it builds up the offerings. Yet with the years-long rumours about another Tron film sequel, a series could have been an intriguing way to keep the story going.
