A dedicated gaming mouse is the Ying to a computer’s Yang. Spending time and money building up a powerful gaming rig is a fruitless pursuit if it is paired with a sub-par mouse.

A gaming mouse needs some decent DPI/CPI to ensure accurate, swift, seamless movement, and a host of programmable macro buttons that’ll quicken up your gameplay and stop you getting fragged as you desperately scroll through your inventory.

Manufacturers offers a vast array of gaming mouse solutions to suit every style and budget. Here’s a run-down of some of the best.

Logitech G203

Understated, lightweight, functional and reliable. You can adjust the sensitivity of the optical sensor (which tops out at a very respectable 8,000 DPI). This wired mouse hits that sweet spot between price, performance and usability. For the uncomplicated FPS player or gamer on a budget, this mouse is tough to beat.

Logitech G300S2 of 10

Logitech G300S

Old but gold. The G300S is a classic workhorse that's an absolute steal – the price reflects its age, not performance. It's still fully compatible with Logitech's robust gaming software and boasts customisable macro buttons. The ambidextrous design is a real boon for lefties, too.

SteelSeries Rival 310

An affordable offering from a premium brand. The Rival 310 is a six-button competition mouse equipped with SteelSeries' fantastic TrueMove3 sensor and 12,000 CPI to ensure a quick and accurate response, and the SteelSeries software suite facilitates user customisation and refinement.

The DPI tops out at a respectable 12,400 and the bundled software will allow the user to fine tune settings. The rapid-fire button will draw some controversy and maybe inspire a few rage quits, but it sure is fun.

Corsair M65 PRO RGB Optical FPS Gaming Mouse5 of 10

Corsair M65 PRO RGB Optical FPS Gaming Mouse

Corsair has produced the ultimate FPS gaming mouse. The aluminium body construction is lightweight, boasts a tunable weighting system on its underside and gliding pads for frictionless movement. One of the eight buttons is a dedicated sniper button, positioned to allow simple and instantaneous sensitivity changes – press it, DPI drops, release it, DPI is back up to speed. The scroll wheel is super tactile and accurate, so no more missing the pistol during those important split-second encounters.

Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum6 of 10

Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum

This mouse really has it all. The ergonomic design makes it very comfortable in the hand, and there are plenty of well-placed buttons. There are five removable weights for customisable resistance, and you have the option of changing the DPI on the fly to lock in on those crispy headshots. The price is a more expensive, but its versatility makes it all the rodent you'll need.

Razer Deathadder Elite7 of 10

Razer Deathadder Elite

The Deathadder Elite is extremely popular with esports professionals because it is simple, smooth and operational. It's a seven-button mouse with 16,000 DPI and a highly refined 5G sensor (some might say it's the best on the market). The ergonomic design is extremely comfortable in-hand, and has tactile, durable switches. It'll never let you down.

Logitech G6008 of 10

Logitech G600

This is a specialist bit of kit aimed at MMO and RPG players who need buttons, and lots of them. The G600 delivers in spades with a total of 20 customisable macro buttons including a dedicated panel of 12 thumb buttons - allowing players to easily make inventory, spell and weapon selections, giving them a huge in-game advantage. If MMORGPs are your bag, this mouse is the perfect pet for you.

SteelSeries Rival 6509 of 10

SteelSeries Rival 650

The Rival 650's tag line promises "next level wireless precision" - and boy, does it deliver. The 12,000 CPI, TrueMove3+ sensor and Quantum Wireless combine to offer a mere 1ms latency. There is also customisable lift off detection, going as low as 0.5mm, which will rapidly increase potential play speed. The weight is customisable too, with 240 possible configurations. It'll charge quickly – just 15-minutes on a USB connection will give 10 hours of battery life (maximum battery life is 24 hours).

Logitech G90310 of 10

Logitech G903

This is one of the best-designed mice on the market. Boasting comfortable ergonomics, the G903 comes with features you won't find on cheaper models. There are swappable side buttons, perfect wireless fidelity, 140 hours of battery life and even the option to charge while you play (via Logitech's Powerplay technology and a compatible mouse pad). If you can stomach the price tag, this is a must-have mighty mouse.

Why should I choose a gaming mouse over an optical mouse?

Gaming mouse sensors differ from an average optical mouse as they are designed to be more responsive and accurate. They have more programmable buttons than an optical mouse as well, so you don't have to reach for the keyboard when on a streak.

How much DPI (or CPI) do I need?

This depends on the kind of games you play, but 3600 DPI should be sufficient for most uses. In terms of accuracy, training yourself to use a lower DPI like 400, 800 or 1200 may be useful.
