Howard Hawks' timeless screwball comedy, a reworking of the cynical court reporter comedy The Front Page, which with one masterstroke - changing the sex of ace hack Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) and making manipulative editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) her ex-husband - elevated the already superior material into a classic battle-of-the-sexes comedy.
For anyone who ever doubted Grant was 'just' a star, this is the one (and, granted, Bringing Up Baby) to examine just how good his comic timing was. Hawks too proves why he belongs further up any 'great directors' list than his oft-compared auter peer, John Ford; Hawks was simply more dynamic, and as he displayes here, able to handle any genre put in front of him.
