Anyone who attended Empire's rather excellent Movie-Con event may have noticed Kim Newman's penchant for making a wavy hand sign every time he moved on to a new question during his bastard-hard film quiz. Ever the in-joker, this was a reference to a new movie called The Wave - just thought you'd like to know.

Inspired by real events and based on the novel by Tod Strasser, this German-language movie tells the story of a high school teacher's unusual class experiment in which he attempts to demonstrate what life is like under a dictatorship.

Despite being unsure at first, they start to respond to and respect their new-found class unity but as the students' boundaries are pushed, things begin to spiral out of control and this newly found cult status starts to take on a life of its own.

We've got our hands on the world exclusive first look at the trailer, which you can see below.

The Wave is released on September 19.
