It's been stuck in the development garage for ages, but Speed Racer is finally out on the starting grid.

The classic 1960s cartoon series has been dragged from limbo by the Wachowski brothers, who have now finished a script and committed to direct a live-action adaptation for Warners.

The film will introduce a new generation to racing driver Speed, a young man driven, sorry, to succeed with his gadget-strewn car, the Mach 5. The script has also found room for the supportive members of Speed¹s family, and for his archrival, Racer X.

Matrix producer and regular Wachowski collaborator Joel Silver is behind the film, having tried to get it moving for more than a decade. There was a time a couple of years ago when Vince Vaughn wanted to make the movie and star as Racer X, but now it looks like it¹ll be an effects-laden Wachowski-fest.

"They are approaching these racing scenes in a way you've never seen before," Silver told The Hollywood Reporter. And they¹re also taking aim at a family audience: "They wanted to do something that could appeal to everybody."

Everybody, eh? Leave the pseudo-philosophical rambling at home, then, please.
