M Night Shyamalan’s **Lady In The **Water took a bath this weekend as the director’s latest singularly failed to dislodge Johnny Depp from his crow’s nest like position from the top of the charts.
Yes, the weekend once again went to Dead Man’s Chest, which is riding high on the waves with $35 million this weekend. The US total for the film is now an impressive $322 million, which means this will be the film to beat for top grossing release for the year. We doubt anything will, though…
In a healthy second place was Sony’s Monster House, which managed $23 million for a launch figure. It helped that this latest ‘CG toon drew positive reviews and that it features plenty for kids to enjoy. The house devoured Shyamalan’s Lady, which arrived with a disappointing $18 million that doesn’t exactly bode well for a long run in the charts. The film actually made slightly less money on the Saturday than it did on the Friday, which is likely down to negative word of mouth.
And then there’s Kevin Smith’s Clerks II. With a much lower budget ($5 million), Smith had less to prove than the others and while a sixth place opening isn’t exactly great, it's his second best opening weekend.
Finally, lagging seriously behind all the other new openers, came Ivan Reitman’s My Super Ex-Girlfriend. The Uma Thurman/Luke Wilson comedy just didn’t seem to click with audiences - perhaps they’d had their fill of superheroes with issues thanks to Bryan Singer?
The rest of the charts was filled with the returning movies – You, Me And Dupree and Little Man continue to do well, while Cars lost some traction thanks to Monster House’s opening and sped to the bottom of the list.
By the power of Greyskull… It’s the chaaaaarts!
