Penguins are the new black… and white. With Madagascar last year and frosty musical Happy Feet on the way in November, you might think that the world’s quota of animated penguins would have been filled already.
Time for another think… Sony Animation (which will next bring us forest ‘toon Open Season) is releasing Surf’s Up next summer. The film takes the theory that penguins invented surfing and runs – or rather – surfs with it.
Our focus is Cody Maverick (I, Robot’s Shia LaBeouf) a young wave enthusiast who dreams of changing the rules for penguin surfers, much as his idol, Big Z, did before him. The trailer’s certainly intriguing – showing off a natty visual style and some well-crafted “retro” documentary footage.
