Success with one of its low-budget horror efforts usually spurs Team Blumhouse into cranking up the machine to produce a sequel, which is exactly the case with 2012’s Sinister. The original saw Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer literally haunted by old home movies and the unsolved murder he’s investigating. Sinister 2, which has put its first teaser online, keeps the concept, but swaps Hawke for Shannyn Sossamon.

James Ransone is returning from the first Sinister in the role of the sheriff’s deputy who tried to help Hawke with the terror-infused home movies he found in his family’s new home. This time around, he’ll be coming to the aid of Sossamon’s single mum, who moves into a rural house with her nine-year-old twins only to discover that the place is loaded with creepy supernatural phenomena. And this time, there’s a spooky cornfield involved to give it that real Children Of The Corn feel. The teaser also appears to derive horror from the idea of spooky kids watching something again and again, which is a terror that any parent with a Frozen-loving little one can relate to.

Citadel director Ciaran Foy is taking over the megaphone for this one, working from a script Scott Derrickson wrote with Sinister collaborator C. Robert Cargill. With Tate Ellington, Laila Haley, Nicholas King, Howie Johnson and Jaden Klein in the cast, Sinister 2 haunts our screens on August 21.
