You would think Tom Hanks would know not to attempt any big cinematic journeys given his transport issues in Cast Away, but the chance to work with Paul Greengrass on a compelling fact-based tale was clearly enough to get him back out on the ocean. Here is the second trailer for pirate drama Captain Phillips.

Hanks is the eponymous Captain Richard Phillips, commander of the American cargo freighter the Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. Phillips attempted to keep his crew safe and sound, and agreed to leave with the pirates as a hostage in order to get them off the ship. How he dealt with what happened made international headlines and led to his becoming something of a hero.

Greengrass, working from a script by Billy Ray, has filtered the story through his trademark blend of tense, real-feeling filmmaking. Hiring newcomers to play the pirates and using some impressive locations, he’s clearly kept things on an even keel. Captain Phillips is out here on October 11.
