Will Gluck will direct Easy A, a modern-day, high school-set comedy update of The Scarlet Letter, for Screen Gems.

That may sound potentially awful, but let us remind you that Clueless was a remake of Emma, and 10 Things I Hate About You was an update of The Taming Of The Shrew, so clearly setting classics against a high school backdrop has worked in the past – and Gluck will be hoping that it can work again.

The story will revolve around a high school junior who wants to be noticed, so she pretends to be the school slut. Which seems to us to be somewhat of a loose retelling of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel, but let’s see how it turns out.

Gluck, who just finished directing the comedy Fired Up for Screen Gems, will polish the spec script by playwright Bert V. Royal. "This is the sharpest, funniest script I have read in a long time," said Gluck, neglecting to explain why he was then going to rewrite it.
