Fresh from singing Elton John songs in Sing, Taron Egerton’s latest project will see him sing Elton John songs in Rocketman – except this time he’s actually going to be Elton John. The Kingsman star is portraying the musical icon in a biopic directed by Dexter Fletcher, and the first image of him in costume reveals a surprisingly authentic makeover for Egerton – donning sparkly orange-tinted specs and some unenviable hair.

The film is currently in production with the likes of Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Madden, Jamie Bell and more also on board. Rocketman marks Egerton’s second film with Fletcher, who previously helmed Eddie the Eagle. It’s being produced by Matthew Vaughn’s MARV Studios, with the filmmaker describing it in an Empire interview as “the first R-rated musical”, and claiming it won’t shy away from “drugs, sex, rock’n’roll.” That’s corroborated by a tweet from Paramount Pictures which says that Rocketman will be “an uncensored human story” (as well as “an epic musical fantasy”).

Rocketman will follow the yellow brick road into UK cinemas next summer on 31 May.
