Like bows? Like arrows? Like gritty retellings of classic English legends? Well, you're going to want to be in Cannes on May 12 this year, as Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe's latest film Robin Hood opens this year's Cannes Film Festival with a thwang.

The decision guarantees a bit of movie-star glamour for the Festival's first day, with stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett likely attendees to accompany Sir Rids. And it will be a real change of pace from last year's opener, Up, a film that was aimed at a very different audience.

The film debuts out of competition, just as Scott's Thelma & Louise did back in 1991, and indeed as Up did last year. The competition line-up still hasn't been confirmed, despite rumours that we can hope to see new films from Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Bruce Robinson and maybe (maybe) Terence Malick. The jury is headed by Tim Burton this year, but it's probably not the case that the film with the twistiest trees in will therefore win.

To read more about Robin Hood, you need only pick up the latest issue of Empire, where we've got the full story behind the film. We're good like that.
