Hallelujah! Preacher is back, and in the new issue of Empire (on sale from Thursday), we visit the New Orleans set of the show’s sophomore run, chatting to cast members Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun and Ruth Negga along the way, and grabbing a few early looks at the show – including the exclusive never-before seen image you see before you now. “It feels like we’re working on a different show,” says Cooper, speaking from the set. “We’re playing the same characters, but the tone has changed dramatically.” With Season 1 ending, quite literally, with a bang, Season 2 shifts gears, introducing new characters, a deeper backstory and more black comedy, as the key trio of Jesse Custer (Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Negga) and Cassidy (Gilgun) embark on a road trip to find God, whereabouts unknown.

“I think the tone has changed,” agrees Gilgun. “It's had to. Initially it was a stationary show where we needed people who hadn't read the comics to invest into these characters. Now that we are on the move, it is tonally going to feel like a change.”
