The Golden Globes have been and gone, the BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominees announced – and now Hollywood’s biggest bash, the Academy Awards, has announced its shortlists. The 2019 Oscars looks set to be a tight race between Roma and The Favourite, each receiving 10 nominations. Alfonso Cuarón’s coming-of-age drama and Yorgos Lanthimos’ barbed period piece both featured in Best Picture and Director, each also earning nods in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Elsewhere, Black Panther received seven nominations overall – including a nomination for Best Picture. It was largely recognised in the technical categories, among them Costume, Original Score, Production Design, and a Best Song nomination for Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s ‘All The Stars’.

The shock snub of the list looks set to be Bradley Cooper, who missed out on the Director category. While the director-star-writer of A Star Is Born received a Best Actor nod, he didn’t end up in the director shortlist – though fans of Cold War will be pleased to see that Pawel Pawlikowski is among those nominees. Barry JenkinsIf Beale Street Could Talk also missed out on the Best Picture and Director categories, while Ethan Hawke’s lauded First Reformed performance didn’t make it either.

The Favourite

Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic Vice proved another strong contender, with recognition in Best Picture, Director, and Best Actor for Christian Bale. It could also be the film to finally win Amy Adams an Oscar – she’s been nominated six times now without a win, but finds herself up for Best Supporting Actress here. BlacKkKlansman also enters the race for Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actor. The Best Actress category continues to be a close-run thing in this awards season – the three-way neck-and-neck race between Glenn Close, Olivia Colman and Lady Gaga looks set to run, with Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio and Can You Ever Forgive Me’s Melissa McCarthy also in the mix.

As with the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice nominations, Bohemian Rhapsody fared well despite mixed reviews. Rami Malek is up for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, while the film is up for Best Picture. Alongside technical nods, it received five nominations overall.

Oh, and we’d be remiss to not mention Avengers: Infinity War, which received a single nomination for Visual Effects. And yes, Into The Spider-Verse is among the Best Animated Feature nominees.
