Orlando Bloom Goes Sci-Fi

He's done pirates, and elves, sword-and-sandal epics and knights in shining armour: Orlando Bloom's making a good fist of trying all the big Hollywood genres, and now he's ticked another off the list with the announcement that he'll star in sci-fi escape story The Cross, with Vincent Cassel and Olga Kurylenko.

The film, set ina border town in the near future, sees Bloom play a man who's "trying to cross a mysterious border, something that no one else has achieved", which sounds intriguing - but we suspect there's got to be a heck of a lot more to it than that. Cassel is in evil mode as the guard trying to stop him; the smokin' hot (also, so hot right now) Kurylenko is the love interest.

Andrew Niccol, of Gattaca and Lord of War, is directing the film, which is due to start shooting in Australia in July. With a mere $24 million budget this won't be a huge effects film but we're hoping for a Gattaca or The Truman Show (which Niccols wrote) level of smart science fiction.
