One Day Trailer Online

We’ve seen the poster already, but now there’s actual, moving footage from Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of beloved, decades-spanning novel One Day starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. The trailer has arrived on the web and you can watch it below.

Based on David Nicholls’ best-selling, opinion-splitting tome, One Day charts the lives of Emma Morley (Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Sturgess), who meet as students in 1998 in Edinburgh. There’s instant chemistry, but while the pair shares a bed, it doesn’t go further than cuddling.

And then we’re off tracking the changing years via the anniversary of their meeting and finding out what happens to them. Emma becomes a teacher, but just can’t seem to find real satisfaction and happiness in life. Dexter, on the other hand, rises rapidly to become a small-time TV celebrity (think early Chris Evans) before his world implodes in a bad marriage and divorced fatherhood. At times, Emma and Dexter lean on each other as best friends, at others, they’re barely talking.

It remains to be seen whether a film can recapture the story without the freedom of a novel’s length, but it certainly looks like they’ve had a good stab at it. While some of the accent work (even from the usually solid Hathaway) doesn’t sound too great from this, we’re still anticipating the final film.

Take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments or on Twitter.

One Day is out on August 26.
