With its Valentine’s Day-adjacent release date a month away now, Universal took the opportunity of the Golden Globes TV audience to launch a new spot for the unconventional romantic drama Fifty Shades Of Grey. Prepare, then, to be told that Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) is one of those ridiculously hot human beings you only encounter occasionally. Which should come as a surprise to few people.
Grey is one of the two central figures here, a handsome but seemingly distant billionaire who unexpectedly meets his match in unassuming but spirited student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Soon he’s trying to woo her the only way he knows how – introducing her to his rich lifestyle and the contents of his BDSM playroom. And while all of that has been covered in previous promos, here we also get a look at Christian’s mother, played by Marcia Gay Harden.
With director Sam Taylor-Johnson and several writers (though the screipt remains credited solely to Kelly Marcel) adapting E.L. James’s book, this one still faces an upward challenge to shake off the shackles of the book’s dodgy, if bestselling, prose reputation. We’ll find out if it translated on February 13.
