We all know that the effects geniuses behind Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes are capable of devolving Andy Serkis into a chimpanzee, but today we have a tiny peek behind the scenes to show how they go about it. Specifically, we have exclusive pictures from a new book, zippily titled Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes: The Art Of The Films by Matt Hurwitz. As that comprehensive title would indicate, it's a soup-to-nuts look at how they made both films.

The upcoming sequel, of course, sees Andy Serkis' Caesar trying to raise a family and lead his intelligent ape brethren into a brave new world. Meanwhile humanity, reduced to a remnant following the release of a virus last time, find themselves butting heads with their hirsute neighbours.

All but one of these images is art from Dawn, with that single shot of apes leaping into a cafeteria the only representative of Rise here. You can see the first glimmerings of ape civilisation in these images: developing a building style, and even art (or is that writing?).

The book will arrive on shelves, courtesy of Titan Books, on July 8. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, meanwhile, hits UK screens on July 17.
