It’s been over a year since we last heard anything about the proposed movie version of Monopoly – yes, the classic board game – with Sir Ridley Scott down to direct. No, you read that right.
So, naturally, we presumed that the project had gone to jail, gone directly to jail, did not pass Go, and did not collect $200.
But today comes news that this utterly, wonderfully demented movie, from Hasbro-Universal is going ahead, with Sir Ridley officially attached as director, and Pamela Pettler brought on board as screenwriter.
Pettler wrote the scripts for Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Gil Kenan’s Monster House, so she has the kind of vivid, morbid imagination needed to bring a board game about property acquisition to life. For the life of us, we have no idea where she’s even going to begin, but when Scott spoke about it last year, he said that he wanted to turn it into a satirical comedy.
Now word has emerged that he hopes to give Monopoly a futuristic sheen a la Blade Runner, so we have no idea what this is going to be like. It’s going to be a world away from Clue, Empire’s favourite board game-turned-movie, that’s for sure.
