John Rice, writer of **Windtalkers **and Blown Away, has signed on for his directorial debut Stan's Cup, billed as an ice-hockey comedy with a touch of the Full Montys.

Stan's Cup tells the story of a fading, broken-down hockey star who gets one last chance to fill his legendary father's skates in a rematch of the 1980 'Miracle On Ice' against a team of ex-Soviet Olympians.

No word yet on who will play the once-great hockey player (think Reg Dunlop and Crash Davis combined under lab conditions), although we do know that he will represent his hometown side, Hockeytown USA - aka Warroad, Minnesota - where filming will begin in March.

It's not clear if the on-ice action will be set in 1980 or the present day; although 2008 does sound a little late in the day for an outbreak of Cold War-era Russkie-bashing, even in the Midwest.
