The first trailer for The Help, based on Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel, has arrived online, and you can watch it below.

Set in the small town of Jackson, Mississippi, The Help chronicles what happens when outspoken, independent college graduate Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan (Emma Stone) arrives home with ambitions to become a writer. But when she starts work on an ambitious project to have the local homes’ African-American maids tell their stories, a huge controversy kicks up.

See, despite the fact that it’s the 1960s and most of the nation is being swept up in the progressive movement and civil rights, Jackson clings to its unspoken code of behaviour and treats the staff as second-class citizen. Spearheading the move to more segregation is driven society queen Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard), who feels that maids should not even be allowed to use the same toilets as the homeowners. And then Skeeter’s book, which lays bare some of the town’s harder truths, arrives…

The Help also stars Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Sissy Spacek, Allison Janney, Mike Vogel and Jessica Chastain. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know your thoughts.

The film itself will be out on October 28.
