The first teaser for the third Insidious chunk – which sees co-writer and regular actor Leigh Whannell sitting in the director’s chair this time – showed a little of what we can expect from the new horror sequel. The full trailer is here, and it has a lot more to explore.
While the focus of the original promo was on young Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) and her father Sean (Dermot Mulroney), they’re still around but Lin Shaye’s psychic Elise Rainier is very much centre stage, helping them understand what’s going on. See, Quinn lost her mother a year ago, and in try to remember or reach out to her, she has inadvertently opened the door between the living and the dead to some very nasty spirits. Cue the usual cavalcade of jump scares, creepy faces, fake-outs and Elise’s first trip – because this is a prequel, remember – to The Further to see if she can help the girl.
Naturally there’s a worry that we know everything will be okay – at least for Elaine and Whannell’s Specs, because we see them in the other films, set later in the timeline – but a chance to dig into the actual origins of the ghastly, ghostly goings-on does seem like a decent place to go with this franchise.
