After a run of festival screenings at the likes of Toronto, Australian crime drama Felony is finally preparing to hit cinemas. To see Joel Edgerton as a cop in a moral quandary, check out the first trailer below.

Edgerton plays Malcolm “Mal” Toohey, a celebrated narcotics detective recently injured in the line of duty, but still plugging away. When he drives sleepily one night, he accidentally knocks a boy from his bike. But when he goes to report the incident, he leaves out the crucial detail that he was the driver responsible, worried what it might do to his career.

Then things get murkier when two detectives – Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson) and Jim Melic (Jai Courtney) – show up to investigate the accident and soon start to twig that Mal isn’t telling them everything. Carl is of the old school opinion that a good cop like Mal shouldn’t have his reputation sullied by something like this, whereas Jim wants to go by the book.

As the boy’s condition worsens, Mal’s conscience begins to nag at him, affecting his family, including wife Julie (Melissa George)... With Edgerton writing the script and Matthew Saville calling the shots, Felony is so far set for Australian release on August 28, but we’ll have to wait and see if it scores a UK date. Given the cast, we’re confident.
