Chris Evans has long harboured ambitions in filmmaking beyond acting, and he had the chance to make his dream a reality at the tail end of 2013 by directing his first film, Before We Go. While the small-scale indie didn’t attract much attention at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, it is headed for American cinemas, with a trailer to prove it.

The film finds Evans as Nick Vaughan, making a living playing the trumpet around New York, including, occasionally at Grand Central Station. It’s there he meets Brooke Dalton (Alice Eve), a young woman in a hurry to catch a train to Boston, but fated to come into Nick’s life when her purse is stolen.

Though she’s initially resistant to his offers of help, the two start a journey through early morning New York, slowly coming to realise that they might end up meaning more to each other than they thought, even as they struggle with past – and present – love. But what does fate actually have in store for them, and will Evans be called away to stop an alien army destroying the city? We’ll guess no on that last one, at least.

Before We Go is out on US iTunes and On Demand now and hits American cinemas on September 4. There’s no indication yet that it has a UK distributor, let alone a date, but perhaps the presence of the likeable stars and Evans making his first trip behind the camera will help it sell here.
