"Daring, funny and deeply disquieting" is how Empire's review describes** The Imposter**. The last time we used the word 'disquieting' may have coincided with the release of Zookeeper, but here, in its proper context, it perfectly captures the dark majesty of Bart Layton's astonishing documentary. Click below to watch the film's new UK trailer.

Like Will Smith in Fred Schepisi's Six Degrees Of Separation, the story dances along fault lines of class, and packs enough suspicious back stories to populate an X-Men spin-off. Unlike that film, Layton's documentary is based on a true story: a 1997 scandal that captured the imagination of America's tabloid-reading population.

Without spilling too many beans, the tale centres on a 23 year-old Frenchman called Frédéric Bourdin and a Texan family he may (or may not) have tried to grift in spectacular style. The rest is an Errol Morris-esque journey that will bend your mind.

The Imposter is out on August 24.
