Jupiter’s moon Europa has long been a tempting target for mankind’s roving eye, especially since it apparently boasts an ocean of liquid water lurking under its frozen surface. Now comes Europa Report, the chronicle of a fictional space mission to explore the frosty world, starring Sharlto Copley and Michael Nyquist. Check out the poster below.

Even though we were warned away from the place by the big announcement at the end of 2010, humanity’s trying again (albeit in a very different cinematic universe that has nothing to do with Arthur C. Clarke’s monolith-happy realm.)

A blend of documentary, alternative history and science fiction thriller, Europa Report follows a contemporary mission to investigate the possiblity of alien life within our solar system. When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean underneath Europa’s icy surface may contain single-celled life, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world to confirm the data and explore the revolutionary discoveries that may lie in the Europan ocean.

After a near-catastrophic technical failure leads to loss of communication with Earth and the tragic death of a crewmember, the surviving astronauts must overcome the psychological and physical toll of deep space travel, and survive a discovery on Europa more profound than they had ever imagined…

Cronicas director Sebastian Cordero is responsible for this latest trip into space, and the cast also includes Daniel Wu, Christian Camargo, Embeth Davidtz, Dan Fogler, Anamaria Marinca, Isiah Whitlock, JR. and Karolina Wydra. It’s set for release on VOD across the pond on June 27, before hitting US cinemas on August 2. There’s no sign of a UK date yet.
