Rather excitingly, we just had Ethan Coen visit the Empire office to talk about his Oscar-nominated new movie True Grit, and while he was here he suggested that the next effort from himself and Joel might just be a horror movie.
When asked about future plans, Ethan also confirmed, "Gambit was just a writing job. It seems like the movie is going to get made but not by us; it never was to have been. Old Fink, the Barton Fink sequel, John Turturro is not old enough yet. And the whole thing may be more a thought experiment than a movie. We don't really know what we're doing yet; we're working on a couple of scripts."
When asked if he'd consider ever doing a full-on horror, as opposed to merely dabbling in the likes of Blood Simple, E. Coen replied, "Funny you should ask, yes, we're working on a couple of scripts now, one of which it would be fair to call a full-on horror movie. Frances McDormand is the monster."
Now we're fairly certain, since we were here to hear his tone of voice, that we can discount the latter part of that statement as a joke (that is, after all, his sister-in-law he's talking about). But we believe him on the first part, so it sounds as though there's at least a good chance that we will see a Coens horror on the big screen.
Anyone else really rather excited about that? After all, these guys accidentally got themselves Oscar-nominated for A Serious Man, which Ethan seemed to believe was extremely un-Oscary; if they make a horror they might accidentally win another golden guy.
