Cam Gigandet, who snarled and hissed for all he was worth as the bad guy, James, in the wildly successful Twilight (stop that infernal high-pitched screaming, damn you!), has signed on to star in the Screen Gems thriller, The Roommate.

Gigandet will play the boyfriend of Leighton Meester’s character, a freshman at college who finds herself under threat when her new roommate starts becoming obsessed with her, in a freaky-deaky Single White Female kinda way.

The psycho roommate has yet to be cast, although with a May start date in the offing, that can’t be too far away.

For Gigandet, the role should represent a step away from potential typecasting as a mad scary villain; however, it’s also another Concerned Boyfriend role, following last year’s The Unborn. He’d best be careful that he doesn’t get caught in that particular rut.

The superbly-named Christian E. Christiansen will direct the movie, from a screenplay written by the marginally less superbly-named Sonny Mallhi.
