Attack The Block, Joe Cornish’s debut as a big-shot movie director with one of those chairs with his name on the back, started filming this week. So, just in the nick of time, a whole host of information has been released about the movie, including its cast and the plot.

The wonderful Jodie Whittaker will star as Sam, a trainee nurse who gets attacked by some tower block-dwelling ruffians while on her way home. However, she’s saved by a falling meteor, and escapes during the confusion. The meteor, meanwhile, has brought with it a vicious alien which attacks the gang, who quickly kill it and display its carcass on top of their block. But that’s only the beginning of their brush with ET – a brush that we’re guessing will drag Sam back into the bloody conflict before the night is over.

Sounds ace – we’ve known from the off that Cornish’s film surrounded an alien attack on a tower block, but it’s nice to have some details to play with. And the casting of Whittaker as the film’s heroine is definitely a step in the right direction.

Also included in the cast is a host of newcomers, including John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones and Simon Howard, while there are a couple of more established names bringing up the rear, in the form of Luke Treadaway and the magnificent Nick Frost.

The movie – which boasts the provisional tagline, ‘Inner city vs outer space’ – was written and directed by Cornish, whose movie star is certainly on the rise, what with this and his work with Edgar Wright on the screenplays for Ant-Man and Tintin. The Wright link doesn’t stop there, either – Nira Park, producer of Spaced, Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead, is also pulling the same duty here. Frankly, we can’t wait for this one.
