After years of Hollyoaks insisting that under-18s were too stupid for decent programmes, the Shameless production team merrily raised two fingers to that idea with this enjoyably bitchy series.

Following a group of Bristolian A-level students through parties, drugs and occasionally college, it takes a couple of episodes to find its feet, but the exuberance and talent of its cast and writers will certainly be welcomed back for the second series.
