Reality television shows have become ten a penny and more predictable than a J.Lo retrospective, but this ‘posh girls work on the farm’ series adds a little life and flair to the flagging genre.

The joy of The Simple Life is that neither the ridiculously spoilt Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie — strutting through cow dung like fledgling drag queens — nor the rednecks with the dubious pleasure of employing them seem to be quite sure who the joke’s on. Which means we can laugh at all of them.
