South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

To get out ahead of the somewhat predictable deluge of tweets asking "oh, South Park is still on?" or complaining that people are over it, yes, South Park is still on, and people are still watching it. More surprising, though is news that co-creators/co-showrunners/lead voices Trey Parker and Matt Stone still want to be involved after all this times, despite having said in the past they'd want to move on to other things. A $900 million deal can be awfully persuasive, though, and so they'll be making South Park until at least 2027 plus 14 new movies, two a year.

The films won't be aimed at the big screen, though: instead Parker and Stone will be bringing them to Paramount's streaming service Paramount+, with the first two working as one big story split into two.

Part of the reason they might be willing to keep on (besides the cash) is the fact that even South Park was impacted by the pandemic, with the show largely on hiatus beyond a couple of specials. Plenty of time for creative batteries to be recharged.

"Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years," said Parker and Stone in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. "When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way to produce the show during the pandemic, Chris (McCarthy), Nina (Diaz), Keyes (Hill-Edgar) and Tanya (Giles) were immediately supportive and enabled us to try something new that turned out to be really well received. We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats. It’s great to have partners who will always take a chance with us." Season 25 launches next year, and the new deal runs though Season 30 at least. That'll buy a lot of Cheesy Poofs.
