We've seen Andrew Scott play conniving and deceitful fellows before — Sherlock's Moriarty to name just one — but with Ripley, he gets to inhabit the skin of Patricia Highsmith's particularly slippery eel Tom Ripley. Check out the beautifully realised new trailer for Steven Zaillian's adaptation of the Ripley tomes…

With Zaillian writing and directing the new limited series, the story finds Ripley barely making ends meet in 1960s New York. He spots an opportunity to deploy his smarts and ethics-free behaviour when he's hired by a wealthy man to persuade his wayward son to quit his life of privileged excess in Italy.

What follows is a complicated web of fraud and murder, Ripley realising that his target, Johnny Flynn's Dickie Greenleaf, is living the life he wants. But when he starts to put his plan into action he raises the suspicions of Dickie's Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning). And then the authorities get involved…

Ripley will launch on Netflix on 4 April.
