Fans of 1989 baseball/magic movie Field Of Dreams are having quite the moment, with a game based on the movie taking place in the States (attended by Kevin Costner no less – they built it, he came) between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees, both in period uniform. How do you follow that? Try news that Michael Schur – creator of shows such as The Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine – is working on a small screen adaptation.
Phil Alden Robinson's movie scored three Oscar nominations, and follows Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Costner), who hears a voice in his corn field tell him, "If you build it, he will come." He interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, upon which appear the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. When the voices continue, Ray seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field...
You might wonder why anyone would attempt to turn the story into a show, but we have faith in Schur (a dyed-in-the-wool baseball fan) to find something magical and fresh about it. US streaming service Peacock clearly agrees, handing down a straight-to-series order.
