Back in 1981, Mel Brooks' History Of The World Part I took a cinematic romp around time, spotlighting different periods and finding the funny in eras such as the Stone Age, Ancient Rome and the French Revolution, with musical numbers including this classic earworm. After 40 years, he's planning a TV-based follow-up, as Hulu has commissioned a variety series of new segments and smart stupidity.
Brooks will oversee the new eight-episode series, serving as head writer and executive producer, with the talents of Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen and Kevin Salter all part of the creative team. The writers' room is opening up this month, and the show will film early next year, though no-one is saying yet which time periods will get the comedy treatment. "I can’t wait to once more tell the real truth about all the phony baloney stories the world has been conned into believing are History!” Brooks said in a statement carried by Variety.
Given the appeal of working with the maestro, expect this one to be loaded with laugh-grabbing talent in front of the camera, though it'll have to go some to compete with the original film's line-up...
