It’s one of the Beeb’s most beloved dramas, and we’ve had to wait seven (yes, seven!) years for it to return to our screens, but the third and final series of Sally Wainwright’s Yorkshire-set drama Happy Valley is almost here – and a brand new trailer has just been released. Watch it below:

The show picks up with Sarah Lancashire’s copper Catherine Cawood counting down the days to her retirement, and doing her best to look after grandson Ryan (played by Rhys Connah, and now a fully-fledged teenager after the gap between series). When she discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, it sets off a chain of events that lead her back to Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), Ryan’s father and her daughter’s rapist, currently serving time in prison and, judging by the shots of his stitched-up forehead in this trailer, having a rough time. With Ryan being older, his curiosity about his dad has grown – and Catherine ends up stuck in the middle of them, as she tries to protect her family and continues grieving for her daughter.

Will Ryan eventually reconnect with Tommy? Will Catherine make it to her retirement? How will this acclaimed series end? We’ll find out at 9pm on New Year’s Day, when Happy Valley Series 3 begins on BBC One and iPlayer.
