When news of a new series based on theGreen Lanterncomicbooks emerged, there was cause for concern as two the writers of the much-maligned 2011 movie were credited among the team bringing it to life. Yet both Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti have gone on to much more successful superhero stories with the Arrowverse TV shows. And for their latest stab at the Lantern tales, they've hired Finn Wittrock to play Guy Gardner.
Unlike the DC shows the pair has worked on for US network The CW, this is based at HBO Max, with a much bigger budget and an even wider scope in its concept. As the official description states: "Green Lantern reinvents the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. They'll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes."
The team, which also includes Seth Grahame-Smith, is close to announcing the casting choice for Scott, and deals are being made for the other main roles, with filming expected this year. That schedule required some quick negotiation with Ryan Murphy, who intended Wittrock (a regular on his American Horror Story anthology) to return as a key part of Ratched's second run of episodes. But with no firm date for shooting on the Sarah Paulson show, he gave permission for the actor to prioritize the Lantern show.
