With long-gestating plan to splice the Men In Black and Jump Street film series dumped a while ago, the two franchises can work independently. And Jump Street is heading down a female-led path, with Sony wanting Tiffany Haddish to star.

Unlike the previous two movies, which saw Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's officers aiming to blend in as students, Collider's sources tell the site that Haddish is in talks to be a cop undercover in a school as a teacher or the mother of one of the students. Well, she's certainly got cine-teaching experience with Night School. And she won't be alone, as the studio is seriously pursuing the idea of Crazy Rich Asians' Awkwafina as the other lead, playing a fellow cop posing as a student.

Rodney Rothman, who was one of the writers of 22 Jump Street, is writing and now directing here, taking over from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are expected to just produce this one.

Given that it's still early days, there's no sign of a release date just yet. Haddish will be heard in another Lord/Miller joint, The Lego Movie 2 (8 February) and also has a voice in The Secret Life Of Pets 2 (31 May).
