Today – assuming you are reading this on 31 October – is Halloween. Which feels like the right day to be reporting that the long-in-development Pet Sematary remake has found yet another potential director. Two, in fact, as Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer are now on board to make the new movie for Paramount.
The 1989 original, based on Stephen King's novel, finds a family moving in next door to a cemetery that spookily allows any animal buried in it to come back to life. Of course, it's not that simple – the creatures aren't quite the same, and when the family's young son dies and they try the same trick, let's just say that it doesn't go well for anyone.
While the original made some money (and spawned a less successful sequel), it's not exactly considered a top shelf entry in either the horror canon or King adaptations. So a chance to do it again could work. And this particular hot potato has been passed around a few notable names, including Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Alexandre Aja. And Paramount had been searching for likely candidates before settling on Kolsch and Widmyer, who impressed the studios with their indie horror Starry Eyes back in 2014. Assuming it all comes together, they won't be hitting Kickstarter to fund their output this time...
