An adaptation of Activision/Blizzard Studio's Call Of Duty game series has been rumoured for years now, at least since 2009. It's finally creeping closer to reality with Variety reporting that Sicario 2: Soldado director Stefano Sollima is making a deal to handle the eventual film.

While the games company is staying mum about the prospect or the potential new hire, the movie plot will apparently draw generally from the successful military franchise's history rather than trying to draw its story from one specific game. There's every chance that it'll opt for a historical setting, but that's yet to be announced. Kieran Fitzgerald has written the script, with Sollima helping to develop it further.

The director is best known for his work on TV series Gomorra, and the Sicario sequel, which sees the return of Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin's characters, is due out on 29 June this year.
