When it was announced that Ryan Reynolds would be slipping into performance capture togs (or at least a voice-over booth) to play squat, yellow, iconic Pokémon Pikachu, the reaction was generally one of confusion. But now we know a little more about what the film is thanks to the first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
The story sees ace private eye Harry Goodman (Paul Kitson) go mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim (Justice Smith) to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Reynolds): a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself.
Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City – a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world – they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
So there you have it... A mystery featuring a little yellow creature with Ryan Reynolds' quippy wit (at least when he's talking to Tim).
Rob Letterman directed the movie, and the likes of Suki Waterhouse, Bill Nighy, Kathryn Newton and Karan Soni are also in the cast. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu itself will be out on 10 May next year.
