While the news first arrived back in 2016 that Mel Gibson was seriously thinking about a sequel to 2004's The Passion Of The Christ, little has been heard of it since then. Now original star Jim Caviezel has told USA Today that he's ready to return to play Jesus again.
Though the first film became controversial because of its extreme violence and disturbing overtones of antisemitism, it also ended up a big box office success, earning $612 million off of a $30 million budget. Now the follow-up, which when it was being talked about before, had a script from Braveheart's Randall Wallace, would pick up the story for The Passion Of The Christ: Resurrection. And no, not the "Jesus is back, and he's pissed" version that has been endlessly spoofed.
"There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience," Caviezel tells the paper. "It's great. Stay tuned. I won’t tell you how he’s going to go about it. But I’ll tell you this much, the film he’s going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It’s that good." That, of course, remains to be seen, and while Gibson has been attempting to recover his reputation after damning personal outbursts, the challenges remain.
