Jennifer Garner got her biggest initial break in the action genre, playing college student spy Sydney Bristow in Alias. But since then, and an underwhelming stab at Elektra a couple of times, she's largely stuck to comedy and more restrained drama. That all changes this year as she stars in John Wick-esque angel of vengeance thriller Peppermint, and the film has a trailer online.

Taken's Pierre Morel, no stranger to turning unexpected people into action heroes, is behind this one, which has a script by London Has Fallen's Chad St. John.

Garner plays Riley North, who is living a quiet, happy life with her husband and daughter. But because such picture-perfect families can never last that long in movies like this, they are killed in a brutal attack on the family. Awakening from a coma, Riley discovers that the system is conspiring to shield the cartel enforcers who carried out the murders from justice. So she sets out to transform herself from citizen to urban guerilla. Channeling her frustration into personal motivation, she spends years in hiding honing her mind, body and spirit to become an unstoppable force – eluding the underworld, the LAPD and the FBI – as she methodically delivers her personal brand of justice. In the process, she becomes a target of the law and a hero to people in the sketchy neighbourhood where she now dwells. But has she taken on too much trying to take down the crime lord behind her family's death?

The first poster for the movie is also now out, and you have to wonder if Riley will also be hunting down the people who photoshopped Garner into looking like her own action figure.
