Director James Wan has finished work on Aquaman, and it's been getting positive buzz in early reactions. Which means it's also time for Warner Bros. and DC to float the idea of a potential sequel. Nestled within a profile of the film's co-star Amber Heard is a mention of "talks" beginning on a follow-up.

Bear in mind that this is truly the early stages of a film like this – there's no formal agreement and not even a writer on board to start figuring out ideas. And of course, it'll all depend on the box office performance of the first movie, which is currently tracking to open in the US without around $65 million. No one can be sure if it'll hit that, but while it sounds a little low, it would mark a success for a film not featuring one of the truly recognisable heroes (even in a post-Justice League world) and opening in December. The studio is looking to boost its prospects by opening it in China before anywhere else.

Aquaman, of course, finds Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, destined to help unite those above and those deep beneath the sea, even if his life experiences to this point have soured him on the idea of ruling Atlantis. But the various underwater kingdoms need him, especially now that his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) is moving with his own plan to unite the factions and deliver a little payback to the polluting, destructive world above. Heard is the noble, practical Mera, who has faith in Arthur's ability to become the hero that Atlantis needs, but isn't as convinced by his attitude...

The film is due in UK on 12 December.
