Death is a constant in the world that George RR Martin created with Game Of Thrones. But now the bloodshed – metaphorical, not literal – has spilled off the page and screen as HBO has decided to axe all but one of the planned Thrones spin-offs.
While the company had originally ordered scripts for a variety of potential follow-ups to its behemoth hit, only the prequel dreamt up by Martin and Kingsman co-writer Jane Goldman is currently moving forward. "That was the one we’re excited about," said HBO programming president Casey Bloys at Wednesday's HBO panel for the TCA summer press tour.
Goldman and Martin's concept is set thousands of years before the events chronicled in the Thrones series and is described thusly: "Chronicling the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend... It’s not the story we think we know." No cast or director is attached yet, but a pilot could be shooting next year.
The other, possibilities included one by Pacific Rim writer Max Borenstein, another from writer/director Brian Helgeland another via Mad Men/Leftovers script regular Carly Wray and the last courtesy of Thrones veteran Bryan Cogman.
