Given that Rampage boasts giant monsters baked into its concept, you might imagine that the first movie adapted from the video game would feature those. But no – the focus is instead on a monster-sized star in Dwayne Johnson, who plays the hero. Check out the first photos above and lower down the page, courtesy of USA Today.

Johnson here is primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who holds people at a distance, but is close with his best friend, George, a remarkably intelligent silverback gorilla he has been caring for since birth. But then George is injected with an experimental serum, which makes him grow to enormous size. As George and some other equally enlarged (and enraged) creatures cut a swathe of destruction across big cities, Okoye must team up with disgraced genetic scientist Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to save both his friend and the day.

Don't go expecting a subtle character study, then. "You have to ratchet up the dial 10 times with Rampage,” Johnson tells the paper. "These monsters are relentless, and audiences are going to find that ride very exhilarating. As an actor in the movie, it’s fun and daunting. It’s 12- to 14-hour days of survival, and it’s not quiet survival either."

And he wants us all to know that the movie channels some classic disaster/monster action. "Even when I was a kid, when you watch these movies everyone is looking up at something and terrified," he continues. “As a character, I loved that position where I’m looking up and there’s nothing you can do but try to survive these three gigantic mutated monsters." Rampage will be out in the UK on 13 April next year. And, as is the way of these things, the trailer is arriving later this week.
