Charlie Cox may or may not return for a third Matt Murdock solo outing, but he is certain of a role in The Defenders. Netflix’s assembly of Marvelites Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist has already been confirmed, with the shoot scheduled for later this year.

When Empire spoke to Cox, he suggested that Daredevil may be right at the forefront of The Defenders. So will he be team captain, as it were? “He can’t do this alone,” Cox stressed of Murdock’s season two arc. “He’s been so adamant about being a lone wolf, about doing it himself, so I think that in order for him to get to The Defenders we needed this second season. We needed to see him be broken individually so that he can - he’s willing to form a team.”

Can we read into that, physically and emotionally bruised by the clash with The Punisher, that he’ll be the spur and instigator for The Defenders? Maybe so, although Cox himself is giving nothing away aside from a glimpse at Daredevil’s more fragile psyche. “The lesson that Matt has had to learn in the second season of Daredevil is that he needs help.”

Speculation it may be, but it’s hard to imagine Murdock taking a back seat. Until then, there’s plenty to keep Marvel fans entertained, with Luke Cage and his unbreakable skin hitting Netflix on September 30, and Iron Fist filming “imminently”. As for Jessica Jones? Season two is yet to receive an airdate.
