Currently drawing acclaim from festival audiences for his role in Manchester By The Sea, Casey Affleck is looking to a previous collaborator for a new movie. He's reuniting with Ain't Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery for The Old Man And The Gun.
Their new movie has Lowery adapting David Grann's 2003 New Yorker article that chronicled Forrest Tucker, a man born in 1920 who spent his life as a bank robber. Frequently arrested and jailed, he escaped from prison 18 times in his life, including an audacious break from San Quentin at the age of 70, becoming something of a folk hero in the process. He was caught by police after a robbery in 2000 and sentenced to 13 more years, but died in 2005.
Lowery has his Pete's Dragon star Robert Redford on to play Tucker, and Affleck will be a detective who admires Tucker's commitment to his criminal mission in life. The cameras should be rolling on that one early next year in Ohio.
And that's not the only film Affleck is eyeing. He's set up indie survival drams Light Of My Life, which he wrote and will direct and Deadline* brings word of *Villain, another script of his that has Sweden's Mikael Marcimain on to direct. Affleck will star as a man whose life is shattered by a home invasion and becomes an obsessed vigilante. Driven to clean up his city, he soon becomes viewed more as a bad guy. Call it the Batman rule, perhaps?
