Veteran TV director Alan Taylor hasn't exactly hit the heights of critical appreciation since leaping to films. His Thor: The Dark World rarely hits top 10 MCU lists and he segued from that to Terminator Genisys. He'll no doubt be hoping for betting things from his next movie, one with a connection to his small-screen past: he'll make David Chase's The Many Saints Of Newark.
The new film is planned as a prequel to Chase's iconic TV series The Sopranos, set in the 1960s as riots sweep through Newark and tensions between African-American and Italian residents boiled over into violence. While the main cast of The Sopranos – itself set in the early 2000s won't be showing up (except possibly as kids) – some of the older folk will see their stories told.
Taylor has a history with the show, having directed episodes in four of the series' six seasons, scoring an Emmy for Kennedy And Heidi in 2007. Chase has written the film with fellow Sopranos alumnus Lawrence Konner, and with a director in place, shooting should happen this year.
